The New LCB CD with Vassar Clements
by Karen Pepe-Delage (February, 2000)

Break Me Off Some Bluegrass is the new release from The Low Country Boil Bluegrass Band. It features bluegrass legend and fiddler extraordinaire Vassar Clements. Vassar has been jamming with a number of bands lately and it is great to see him backing up the next generation of bluegrass pickers.

The band hails out of Hilton Head, South Carolina and includes some of the best young talent around. The group is keeping the spirit of old-time bluegrass alive while adding more of a high-energy edge to this genre of music.

The new release blends old-time bluegrass with a fresh new energy combined with an endearing lyric. The first track, "Shamrockin'," will get you jigging with its lively celtic beat. "My Time to Fly" has a high, lonesome feel. Vassar accentuates this cut beautifully on the fiddle. "Once Upon a Time" has a sweet folky found reminiscent of Neil Young's "Comes a Time." The cut "Sibling Rivalry" emphasizes the struggles and strengths two brothers experience with a sense of realistic brotherly love. "Low Country Boil (with salsa on the side)" features the banjo with a jazz twist.

It is good to see the spirit of American music still stirrring in the sould of the next generation. Judging from the tremendously positive support these guys have enjoyed, we should be hearing a lot more from those Low Country boys.
