![]() Return to Goat Notes Archives First published in Lonely Goat Print Magazine Volume III - #2 February 2000 Goat Notes Goat Greetings from the land of melting snow. The good news is that there is a lot shows on the horizon. The bad news is you will have to make some choices. As usual, we have hibernated in the snow throughout the post-New Year's fallout and waited, and watched, and prayed for the sign of Springfull hope. Thankfully, February has arrived and the tours are starting. Music is plentiful in the Tarheel state again! Get out and see some shows. I'm sure you need it as much as I feel I do. Speaking of North Carolina, I'm going to be adding more specific coverage of the bands that reside in our state or who tour here monthly. An informal pole of the readership indicates that everyone would like full tour schedules for the bands we know well around the state. I have always listed only shows within NC. Now I will be listing where Acoustic Syndicate, for example, is when they are not here. It makes sense that you may have the odd free weekend and want to support your favorite band on the road. Bands love to see faces from home at the away gigs. The fans love seeing their band somewhere new and the joy of introducing new people to the music they love. This change will also affect the website. I am only going to provide band links for the in state bands and bands touring NC monthly. My intention is to spend more time providing you information about the great bands we have in our area. I have attempted for some time to provide links to 'every kind band known to man,' but I have found that other sites like Jambands.com have the same if not a better list. So I am dropping my super-sized list for a more focused approach. Back to the news...Jive Turkee from Winston Salem has added a weekly performance to their schedule. They will be playing for Free @ 10 PM every Thursday @ Little Sturgis in Winston Salem. After many shifts in the lineup, Jive Turkee is starting to sound familiar and they have gelled into a nice jam machine. Check em out. Folk Music on WUNC. If you are able to receive the UNC Chapel Hill radio station @ 91.5, turn your dial there on your weekend evenings for some great music. Friday nights from 9 -11PM host Freddy Jenkins plays acoustic -based music. After that, he plays a smoking blues show from 11PM - 2AM. Saturday nights from 8-11PM and Sunday nights from 7-midnight, hosts Mark Rallings and Keith Weston play old-time, bluegrass, gospel, and folk music. I have found this show to be relaxing and educational way to end my weekends. You can find out more about these shows at the WUNC website wunc.citysearch.com. I was contacted this month by The Southern Lights. They are a five piece rock outfit based in Boone, NC. I talked with Brad Boughton, drums and vocals, who said their influences range from folk to bluegrass to ska. The rest of the band includes Pat Cardwell (guitar, vocals), Joseph Gibson (keyboards, vocals), Scott Stewart (guitar, vocals), and Eric Swanson (4, 5, and 6 string bases, vocals). Interestingly enough, some dates for TSL showed up at some of my usual stops. Check out What's Happening and check out The Southern Lights. Let Lonely Goat know what you think. Hot off the press...preliminary Smilefest 2000 information: Smilefest 2000 Confirmed Bands so far... Max Creek Don't forget about the Ancient Harmony gathering at Ziggy's on Sunday, February 27th. The Thanksgathering in November was so much fun, Mr. Charlie's and Friends are doing it again. The potluck dinner at 5PM is also happening again. Bring a dish and a smile for some friendly times before the show. There will be an information booth and petition signing for the Honor Ride for a National Holiday for Native Americans. Come learn more about this movement. Ancient Harmony will start at 6PM and keep on going as long as we want to keep on gettin' down. Thanks go out as usual to Seth and J.D. Edwards for their contributions this issue as well as first time contributor Chris Kempf and the always helpful Mama K. Be seeing you... |
