July 2001 Goat Notes

07.25.01
The schedule is once again full of good music so catch a good show this weekend. I used up all of my good notes last week, so this email is going to be pretty short.

Last week I mentioned the 13th Annual BeleChere Street Festival in Asheville and I'm giving you another reminder this week. <http://www.belechere.com>

I also want to remind everyone about the Brushy Mountain Jamboree being presented by Smilefest Productions on August 17-19 at Van Hoy Farms in Union Grove, NC. If you enjoyed Smilefest last June, it's a good bet you'll find a similar experience at BMJ. <http://www.smilefest.com>

If you have not checked out the Features section of Lonely Goat Central recently, stop by to check out some of the new postings. We have photos from the most recent Hookahville and a new installment of the Lonely Goat Comic (conceived and illustrated by Seth Broadstreet). Seth is asking for help giving the Goatboy a name. Send him an email at cthulio@earthlink.net with any suggestions or just to say thanks for doing the comic. I know I really enjoy each installment. <http://www.lonelygoat.com/lonelygoat/features/lgcomic.htm>

The Goatee is late, but the content is early and there is a lot this week so I'm hoping you'll let me slide. Be aware that I'm stretching the usual territory a bit geographically too.

Boston's Addison Groove Project will make their first appearance in our state next week as part of their Summer Southeast Tour including a stop in Asheville for the BeleChere Street Festival. Check them out if you get the chance jam fans.<http://www.addisongroove.com>

Speaking of BeleChere, it's July 27-29 in Downtown Asheville, NC. If you like the street festival atmosphere, I've always heard good things about this one. Some of the acts that I'd be sure to catch include the aforementioned Addison Groove Project, The Southern Lights, Greasy Beans, t.h.h.e. Mood Cultivation Project, The Tyler Ramsey Trio, Foundation Stone, and Les Jemehlo. <http://www.belechere.com>

Charlotte's Wavy Train is releasing thier new CD 'One Big Happy Accident' this Saturday at the Visulite Theatre. It's a live CD of previous Visulite shows from 12.1.00, 1.12.01, and 4.7.01. Live Oak will open the show. <http://www.wavytrain.com>

Ratdog will return to North Carolina this fall at Ziggy's in Winston Salem on Tuesday, September 25th. I think we all know this will sell out, so do what you can to secure your early ticket for this intimate venue. Mail order started July 19 through GDTS. <http://www.gdtstoo.com>

If you haven't heard about it already, the Thirteenth Annual Jerry Garcia's Birthday Bash is this weekend at Sunshine Daydreams Campground in Terra Alta, WV. It's a six hour drive from mid-NC but has a great lineup and a great vibe.<http://www.sunshinedreams.com>

Atlanta is having their Jerry Jam this weekend too. It's a two day event at the Masquerade Music Park and is presented by Z93 and The Dunhams. Featured acts include moe., The Dirty Dozen Brass Band, Ancient Harmony, and Robert Walters 20th Congress and it's a benefit for the Upper Chattahoochee River.<http://www.ancientharmony.com>

Also in Atlanta this Friday, July 20...A BENEFIT FOR CAMP SUNSHINE - T-Dawg's Productions is very proud to present THE LAURA LOVE BAND w/ special guests Barbara Lamb and CAROLINE AIKEN opening the show at the Dogwood Brewing Company.<http://www.tdawgsproductions.com>

Have you heard about the end of summer bash that's brewing for NC? Ziggy's presents the Van Hoy Music & Arts Festival Labor Day Weekend at well, Van Hoy Farms (the home of Smilfest) in Union Grove, NC. Go ahead and ask off work for Friday. <http://www.ziggyrock.com>

Alot of you may have heard about the Labor Day event via Dark Star Orchestra. Orginally they were scheduled for the event, but instead they'll be doing some inside dates in NC that weekend. Here's the schedule:
* Dark Star Orchestra with David Gans opening
* Sat - 9/1/01 - - Ritz Theatre - Raleigh, NC
* Sun - 9/2/01 - Asheville Music Zone - Asheville, NC

We all have some tough choices in this week's schedule. The important choice is to choose to support live music regardless of who you choose to catch this week. As my friend's two year old says, "Have fun!"

I'm excited about David Gans return to NC this week. You can catch him in Charlotte with Nth Degree Sunday, in Boone on Tuesday, and Tate Street Coffee in Greensboro on Wednesday. David Gans has just recently released a live CD featuring recordings from his 1999-2000 US tour which features his originals and a few of his well chosen covers from the likes of Gram Parsons and of course the Grateful Dead. Take advantage of this opportunity to experience a performer and scholar who has lived within the heart of the Grateful Dead family for so many years.<http://www.dgans.com> You can also read my review of David Gans' show at Tate Street Coffee in April of 2000. <http://www.lonelygoat.com/lonelygoat/features/tc_gans.htm>

I also see an event happening in Kannapolis this weekend at the Fieldcrest Stadium. David Grisman, Peter Rowan, Vassar Clements, and Donna the Buffalo are all on the bill. I don't know any more than that so call the information number if you are interested - (704)932-3267.

Of course the biggest news is the String Cheese Festival next Tuesday & Wednesday in Rockingham: Tuesday & Wednesday July 17 & 18 - A Two Day Camping Incident at Rockingham Field in Rockingham, NC. Tuesday features The String Cheese Incident, Del McCoury, Acoustic Syndicate, and Keller Williams. Wednesday features The String Cheese Incident, Leftover Salmon, Keller Williams, and Junior Brown. Tickets are $55 for a two day camping pass which includes parking. Charge by phone: 910-582-3400. <http://www.stringcheeseincident.com>

I'm going to keep this real short this week due to some pressing deadlines and the July 4th holiday.

Speaking of July 4th, I see shows in Raleigh, Charlotte and Greensboro tomorrow so catch some good music after the fireworks and dance off a few of those hamburgers (or Veggie Burgers if you prefer).

Many thanks to Marcus Horth and Artistika Cafe for presenting the LUCIDITY FEST last Saturday. It was a well planned and enjoyable event and served to emphasize just how much talent is out there waiting to be heard. Let's continue to nurture our music community in Greensboro. Go see live music.
