March 2002 Goat Notes

03.22.02
April is just around the corner and I've been checking on a few upcoming festivals. Here is a preview of what is in store for the month of showers:

* April 19-21 * GREENFEST * The Chicken Shack * Chapel Hill * http://www.unc.edu/student/orgs/norml/

* April 25-28 * MERLEFEST * Wilkesboro Community College * Wilkesboro * 800-343-7857 * http://www.merlefest.org/

* Apirl 26-28 * CITYFEST LIVE! * Uptown * Charlotte * 704-483-8555 * http://www.centercitymusicfest.com/

* April 26-28 * SPROUTING GRASS MUSIC FESTIVAL * Big Laurel Road * Mars Hill * 828-689-3847 * http://www.geocities.com/sproutinggrass/

There is a new old venue in Winston Salem. PROJECT SPACE 211 is the rebirth of the former space known as The Wherehouse, located at 211 East Third Street. After closing in late 2000 to bring the space up to building codes, the group which is running the facility did something you would never expect: they applied for non-profit status. The space, referred to in the abbreviated form of PS211, will primarily feature bands within the Indie Rock scene but the focus is on supporting the development of art of many kinds from the visual to the audio. The bohemian underground in Winston Salem is putting their time and energy where their mouth is. What a refreshing idea! <http://www.ps211.org>

I've been running an ad for the GOOD KARMA PSYCHEDELIC ARTS FAIR for a few weeks now. The event is this Saturday at the Arts Center in Carrboro and will feature a huge display of work from artists around the country as well as the music of BAREFOOT MANNER and JULE BROWN. Doors open at 7PM and the music starts at 8PM. Lonely Goat will have a booth set up and I'll have a few of the first edition shirts for sale too. This should be a great time and I hope to see you there. http://www.templeballgallery.com

Many apologies to everyone for last week's big ooops! I completely confused the name and web address for the Widespread Panic fan zine in Charlotte. The web site is WRANGLERSPACE not SPACEWRANGLER, as I had it listed, and the correct web link is http://www.wranglerspace.org. I guess I was in too much of a hurry last week and I forgot to test the links in the new Yahoo!Groups format. Thanks to everyone who let me know about the error and apologies again to the folks at WRANGLERSPACE.

This is the first email I am sending through the new Yahoo!Group for thegoatee. I hope everyone gets it and doesn't encounter any problems with the Yahoo! delivery system.

Many thanks to everyone who has checked out the new link pages at Lonely Goat Central and sent in new links to add. Keep 'em coming! Now that I'm fairly comfortable with the information on the links pages, I'm going to start working on some bells & whistles for the Central page. Some folks have been sharing web knowledge on how to jazz it up a bit and I'm thankful for their help. We'll see what I can do with it.

Last week I ran an ad for the Widespread Panic spring tour for the MusicToday.com folks. If you haven't noticed theWRANGLERSPACE link on my Publications page, be sure to check out Kevin's page. He has everything you want to know on the WP scene. <http://www.wranglerspace.org>

DAVID GANS will return to Tate Street Coffee in Greensboro again this Saturday, March 16. This has become a regular stop for in his recent tours and it is an engaging and enriching experience full of his original songs and a usually a fair number of tunes you may recognize from the Grateful Dead. Good vibes, good music, and good coffee. It's hard to beat. If you are in Greensboro, you owe it to yourself to stop by Tate Street Coffee on Saturday around 8PM. Check out the David Gans site @ http://www.dgans.com.

Long time Lonely Goat supporters Mark & Celeste of Mister Charlie's Kind Shows are throwing a St. Patty's day party at Ziggy's in Winston Salem on Sunday. It all kicks off at 6PM and will feature performances from ANCIENT HARMONY with new friends from Charlotte THE RUDE MECHANICALS (formerly VINE). It's just six bucks and there will also be a screening of GRATEFUL DAWG, the recent documentary about the musical friendship between Jerry Garcia and David Grisman. I hear there are more surprises to be discovered at the event. Wear green and a smile!

There is a lot of new information posted at Lonely Goat Central in the form of links to NC resources for all styles of music. Here is a list of new pages and updated pages:
* What is a Lonely Goat - http://www.lonelygoat.com/lonelygoat/whatislg.htm
* Festivals in NC - http://www.lonelygoat.com/lonelygoat/festivals.htm
* Publications in NC - http://www.lonelygoat.com/lonelygoat/publications.htm
* Agents in NC - http://www.lonelygoat.com/lonelygoat/agents.htm
* Promoters in NC - http://www.lonelygoat.com/lonelygoat/promoters.htm
* Labels in NC - http://www.lonelygoat.com/lonelygoat/labels.htm

I will be adding another links page for links outside of NC that I have posted on my links page before.

The biggest news is the changes to the What's Happening page <http://www.lonelygoat.com/lonelygoat/whatshappening.htm>. I'm no longer posting a calendar of my own. I've explained this decision on the calendar page and I encourage everyone to read this page and do what you can to address the problem of a comprehensive calendar for NC music.

Finally, I am almost finished setting up the new Goatee group at Yahoo. Next weeks email will hopefully come from that resource and we will see how it goes. Thanks for sticking with me through the transition.
