The Photography of Duke Andrews
(March, 2000)

"In 1990 I began a project of creating abstracts with light and color using a 35mm camera. The images included here are without filters and use a standard 50mm lens. During this time I tried using various filters, but my best results were most often without them. These particular images are amongst the first I attempted. They seem to photograph an incomprehensible dimension of energy and lifeforce that could never be perceived by our natural senses. They evoke a powerful force of motion and wonder and could represent the macro or the micro worlds of existence. In a more literate sense they appear celestial, giving view to a cosmic sea and storm fused with energy and gases or a violent atmospheric event soaring through the dense skies of Jupiter. Over the past decade I have created several hundred images using whatever techniques came to mind towards the goal of making something inspirational and beautiful."
