October 1999 Goat Notes

Welcome to the first issue of the second year of Lonely Goat. Currently, it looks like it will be on time for a change.

If you went to the College Hill/ Tate Street Music & Arts Fair last month, you couldn't miss the Lonely Goat information table. True to form, it was the most reflective item around and the sun that day just made it that more intense. There are some photos on the website. Check them out. Thanks to all the folks who came by and brought your friends to find out about the magazine. I hope to do more of these public events and get the word out. If you know of an event where people might like to find out about Lonely Goat, contact us and we'll check into an information table.

Speaking of the Tate Street Fair, the music was no slacker that day either. Folkswaggin' appeared late in the afternoon with some new material including a cover of The Dead's "Feel Like a Stranger" and a new bluegrass influenced original. They've even got a show coming up at The Blind Tiger October 9th. I hope to see all the folks there. I've been told that Jason Blalock, sometime lead vocal & rhythm guitar, will be at this show. By the way, congratulations to Jason and Christina on the entry into the wedded world. Best wishes to you both for a long and happy life together.

I also heard some of the new Mad Dog Quartet at the Tate Street Fair and boy do I feel stupid for missing a few shows of late. I'll need to hear some more before I can describe this newer sound, but I recommend checking out MDQ again soon.

Following up on the report about The Low Country Boil Bluegrass Band last month. The new banjo player is Jimmy Wolling. For the newcomers, autoharp dynamo Gavin Daly recently left the band to join the Airforce. LCB will be at Cue-N-Spirits later this month if you want to hear a taste of the new sound. They will also be at the MagnoliaFest in Florida mid-october.

Speaking of MagnoliaFest, lots of bands who have toured through the state will be there including our good friends Ancient Harmony. I have never been disappointed by these Georgia groovers who play some excellent originals and some knock-you-down covers. Anyone for "Cosmic Charlie?" I've never heard them play it, but the other day it jumped into my head that I would like to hear them throw that one in late second set. Just a thought guys.

Also relative to MagnoliaFest, Day by the River is on the bill but I do not think they will be playing. I am very sad to report that DBR has broken up after 10 years. I'm even sadder to report that they were involved in a car accident on August 15 in which sound engineer Lee Laurence was killed. Lonely Goat extends its sincerest sympathy to the band and family of Lee. Reports are that the break-up was decided prior to the accident. Although I have never caught a DBR show, I've been told it was not something to miss. Best of luck to the remaining members and we hope to see you emerge again with some new projects.

Speaking of new/ side projects. Joe Chirco, drummer for The Zen Tricksters will be playing a couple of weeks in early October with The David Nelson Band in the midwest. The Zen Tricksters will be in North Carolina for two dates this month and Joe will be with them. I'm glad to see them again.

All this talk about MagnoliaFest reminds me that I should also plug T-Dawg's Harvest Festival coming up in Atlanta. It's a much shorter drive and somewhat cheaper than Florida if you have to choose one or the other. This is their second year and their first year at the new Atlanta's Back Porch venue. I expect it will be a great time and recommend it highly. Many of our local favorites will be there including Acoustic Syndicate, The Larry Keel Experience, and The Snake Oil Medicine Show along with some top national names like Stir Fried with Vassar Clements.

Speaking of Stir Fried, I caught them at Hookahville Fall and they are something to hear. The Recipe also had a great set Saturday afternoon and ekoostik hookah just keeps amazing me more each time. Keller Williams was also there and did his usual guitar acrobatics that causes jaw dropping everywhere he goes. Keller is playing some dates in North Carolina this month with The String Cheese Incident. He also will have a new album out in the next few months in which he is backed by none other than SCI.

I've added a new listing to the weekly events on the What's Happening? page. Our new friend Joel is hosting a two hour radio show on WQFS 90.9 Guilford College in Greensboro. He features all live recorded music including many of the kind bands we cover. The show has just been assigned a permanent spot for the fall which is Wednesday's from 6-8 PM. There is also a nice world music/ reggae show following the jam show. I'd like to have more listings of radio shows worth catching. Contact Lonely Goat if you know of one we should list.

be seeing you...
