November 1999 Goat Notes

Goat Greetings...It's been a busy October and this issue is about a week off at the time I'm writing. It's a good issue though, which may or may not make up for the delayed delivery.

November dates are upon us, including the Dark Star Orchestra tour with four dates in the state of NC and six more which are driveable. Note the six more. The sixth date has been added on Sunday, November 21 in Columbia, SC. First I want to encourage you to catch one of these shows. It's worth the trip. Second I advise you try to catch them early in the tour because you will want to see more. Lonely Goat is sending a road crew out to cover the tour for the December issue. Thanks to DSO for responding so enthusiastically to our idea. It should be a great article.

Widespread Panic's tour is in full force including the November date in Winston Salem. You can't miss the ad in this issue for the after party right across the street at Ziggy's with Ancient Harmony & Emma Gibbs Band. This is going to be a special night!

On the next day, Saturday, you may want to consider the Ratdog show in Raleigh or WSP in Hampton, VA. Either way, plan to come back to Ziggy's early Sunday for THE LONELY GOAT THANKSGATHERING featuring Ancient Harmony. That's right. We're puttin' on another happenin' on November 28 at Ziggy's. Admission will be $5 and it's an early show. Doors open at 7PM. Come on over and shake off a few Thanksgiving pounds with one of Georgia's best roots rock bands.

This month I start a new column featuring bands from The Homegrown Music Network. Each month I'll run a few bits and pieces about one of their artists and try to pick ones who you might have the chance to see during the month. November features Smokin' Grass who are here early in the month so I hope you actually have time to catch them by the time the issue arrives.

Folkswaggin' is ready to release Volume I of a two volume CD set called Retread. Catch the release party November 13 at Chumley's in High Point. The advance copy has gotten a lot of play already. It's a true stroll down the Folkswaggin' memory lane with excerpts from some favorite shows including a certain 1997 Triangle Billiards show, a Blind Tiger show, and Smilefest 1998 which was one of just a few Folkswaggin' String Band performances. Watch for a full review next month.

Blueground Undergrass will release Live at the Variety Playhouse on November 11th. The recording is from a BGUG show on July 10 of this year and will be available on the Phoenix Rising label. Also on Phoenix Rising is the new CD from prog rock icons Ozric Tentacles called Waterfall Cities. Light show not included. You can visit Phoenix rising on the web at www.phoenixmedia.com.

I'm sad to report another band has pulled the plug. Quiver, who we've seen a good bit of in the past year, has decided to call it quits after five years. The press release firmly states, however, that each member has plans to return in some fashion very soon. We'll keep an ear out.

The Zen Trickster's came through in October. Did you know that Rob Barraco (keys) and Jeff Matson (guitar) joined Phil Lesh, Steve Kimock, John Molo and Bobby Strickland at the Warfield Theatre in San Francisco just before they came to see us? Now if Phil will just come to NC.

One more new CD you may want to know about is a live double disc effort from Dave Matthews Band. Listener Support It is pulled from the PBS concert last September 11th at Continental Airlines Arena. It's set for a November 23 release; just in time for Christmas.

October had some great festivals. T-Dawg's Second Annual Harvest Festival in Georgia was wet and muddy, but 1800 folks came out for some once in a lifetime music. The Magnolia Festival in Florida happened in the midst of hurricane Irene, but amazingly enough only saw a few drops of rain Friday night. Talk about your good vibes. Thanks to the promoters for making it happen for kind music. Check out Wildman Steve's notes on both festivals in the Features section.

The Disco Biscuits came through in October as well. If you caught one of their shows, it'll have to last you for a while. TDB has pulled just about all of their dates for the rest of 1999 except the New Year's show and a few others. The website says that they just need some time to get focused for the millennium. Me too.

Just before printing, I received an update from our friends Magellan. They have added a fifth member in the form of John Russell, who you may know as the former drummer for Bag of Nickels. The band seems eager to start working in the new lineup. Check out What's Happening for a few of their dates this month.

Finally, thanks to everyone who keeps this thing going, especially our new contributors this month: Wildman Steve Bronson & Manuel Carrasco Jr. as well as the unstopable Seth Broadstreet for his new comic strip.

be seeing you...
