August 2000 Goat Notes

8.29.00
I've posted two new photo galleries at the Lonely Goat site. Bill Nolen sent me some shots of Acoustic Syndicate from Stompin' '99 and Down Home in Tennessee. Thanks to Bill for sharing these with everyone.

There are revisions all over the Loenly Goat site. This weekend I added stars throughout the site which jazzes things up a bit. I also finally posted information on web hosting and a multitude of other services Lonely Goat has to offer. There is even an online portfolio! Stop by and check it all out.

Morning Glory Visuals <http://www.lonelygoat.com/mgv/index.htm> continues to post new photos. This week they've added ekoostik hookah, Leftover Salmon, String Cheese Incident, & probably more by the time you read this. Stop by and check it out.

Calling all spreadheads. Check out http://www.wranglerspace.org for the latest on WSP from a North Carolina source. Thanks to Kevin for offering this great site and letting Lonely Goat know about it. I've added it to the Lonely Goat Links page.

This weeks lyric in honor of Hookahville XIV:

'Life is a journey,
that's the head on the nail.
The path you're on, that's the key,
not the end of the trail.
Slow down like me now, mama,
you might have a ball.
You wouldn't want to die to find out
you hadn't lived at all.'

ekoostik hookah from 'Through Hiker' on the 1998 studio release 'Where the Fields Grow Green' <http://www.ekoostik.com>

Don't forget to check the jambase main page on Thursday for Dennis' weekend planner notes. Dennis continues to do a great job with this weekly posting and I've received a lot of positive feedback from folks. Thanks again Dennis.

I'm starting off this weeks notes with a new feature....The Weekly Lyric:

"I just want to thank you, for being here with me;
holding up the vision, in harmony." Max Creek

I was lucky enough this week to run into a CD of Max Creek's performance at Smilefest last June. I can't get enough of it. I know it is quite a tease to mention this, but I'm hinting at the bigger picture which is some sort of official Smilefest CD tree or maybe some MP3s on the website. Look for it soon. There are a few more sets to master yet and I'm really excited about sharing some incredible music with you.

Check out the new images at Morning Glory Visuals <http://www.lonelygoat.com/mgv/index.htm>. Just added today: David Grisman Quintet at Hookahville Spring 2000.

This weekend offers up some great festival destinations. You can't lose with any of these:
CAMP BISCO <http://www.walther-productions.com> in Pennsylvania featuring The Disco Biscuits.
WORMTOWN FESTIVAL <http://www.wormtown.com/Wormfest.htm> in Rhode Island featuring Max Creek.
DEAD OF THE NITE <http://www.baysoft.net/prod+> at Sunshine Daydreams in West Virginia featuring Dark Star Orchestra.
Looking to the future, check out HOOKAHVILLE on Labor Day <http://www.hookahville.com> in Ohio featuring Ekoostik Hookah and THE RECIPE FAMILY COOKOUT on September 8 <http://www.walther-productions.com> in West Virginia featuring The Recipe .

There are a ton of dates in the Jambase for NC right now. Stop by and check out the full listings up into November at this point. Also look for Dennis' weekend planner notes Wednesday PM on the Jambase front page.

Here I am apologizing again for another late email. I'm going to try and get back on a Tuesday schedule next week. Many apologies again.

Morning Glory Visuals, our newest website addition, has started sending in some content. We've posted photos of The Recipe from the Allgood Festival last Spring. By the end of the weekend we'll have Godon Stone Band from 3.31.00, Merl Saunders & Melvin Seals from Ziggy's 10.22.99, and Blueground Undergrass from Ziggy's 3.3.00. Stop by and check them out <http://www.lonelygoat.com/mgv/index.htm>.

This just in from T-Dawg in Atlanta who always puts on quality events. Be sure to check out the 3rd Annual Harvest Festival too <http://www.harvestfest2000.com/index.html>:
Sat. August 19...T-Dawg's Productions presents Blueground Undergrass in
first visit to the legendary Green Acres Music Hall in Bostic, NC, just
outside Forest City. This venue has played host to many of the legends of
bluegrass including Bill Monroe and John Hartford, not to mention the
historic and ground-breaking band New Grass Revival. Showtime is around
8PM, and admission is $15, w/ camping included ;-) Folks, this is a great
time for everyone. For directions, please visit the following link, which
comes courtesy of Acoustic Syndicate.

If you feel like a little drive, check out what Pro+ is doing at Sunshine Daydream in West Virginia this weekend <http://baysoft.net/prod+/>. A lot of familiar names like Donna the Buffalo, Acoustic Syndicate, Larry Keel Experience, and Snake Oil Medicine Show are on the bill.

I also listened to a live CD from Raleigh's 'The Yeti' this week. It's some good blues-rock and yes they play the Dead (a nice 'other one> NFA> other one' in the middle of the set). They don't have a website yet and are considering a name change from what I hear, but they sound like loads of fun. A very enthusiastic crowd fills this recording with some great vibes.

Dennis has another great posting at the Jambase site. Check it out for a quick rundown of this weekend's shows.

First off, please accept my apologies for the late issue this week. It has been a busy week at Lonely Goat and lots of folks have been contacting us
about all kinds of cool stuff. Thanks to everyone who has called or sent emails this week. We're getting in touch with everyone as quickly as possible so be assured that if you have not heard back yet, you will soon.

The Jomeokee Jamboree last weekend left us all with some mixed feelings. Bryan Rodgers wrote a pretty accurate review in the Home Grown Music
Network's email this week. Here is the link: http://www.homegrownmusic.net/jomejam2000.shtml. I'd like to send out a big thank you to the Smilefest staff who really stepped up when the need arose. A lot of these folks were recruited on the spot and they did a great job of keeping the vibe alive. I'd also like to point out the incredible patience and perseverence of the fans (particularly the Spreadheads) who maintained a kind attitude throughout the weekend despite the venue obstacles. Finally, a big thanks to Jay Stephens at Ziggy's for throwing the event. Jay was left in a real predicament after the pristine mountain site at Pinnacle was pulled out from under him less than a month before the event. All things considered, the Jomeokee Jamboree went pretty well. I look forward to the next one...hopefully in a field under the stars.

Dennis Humphries continues to post weekly picks to the Jambase site. Check out his weekend planning notes at http://www.jambase.com.

I caught up with T.H.H.E. Mood Cultivation Project at Jomeokee. I'll be adding them to the bands page at Lonely Goat. Check out their website at:

Hey Now -
I sent out some misinformation about the Jomeokee after parties this weekend. Here is the correct information. Sorry for the confusion.
- Cosmic Charlie is not playing on Friday late nite at Ziggy's. Ziggy's has Weekend Excursion, a pop band like Hootie, on Friday and it is not a free show with your writsband/ pass.
- Cosmic Charlie is playing Saturday nite and Sunday nite at Ziggy's. Admission to these shows is free with your writstband/ pass. Saturday Foxtrot Zulu will also play at Ziggy's.
- Cosmic Charlie has cancelled their Jomeokee performance on Friday afternoon, so your only opportunity to catch them is at the after show parties at Ziggy's.
- There is no aftershow party at Brew Ha-Ha's on Friday. They have a rap act scheduled.
Here is a new summary for the weekend's aftershow parties:

Friday Nite Late Nite:
Ziggy's - n/a
Brew Ha-Ha's - n/a
Freddie B's - Ancient Harmony

Saturday Nite Late Nite:
Ziggy's - Cosmic Charlie & Foxtrot Zulu
Brew Ha-Ha's - unconfirmed
Freddie B's - Jive Turkee

Sunday Nite Late Nite:
Ziggy's - Cosmic Charlie
Brew Ha-Ha's - n/a
Freddie B's - n/a

Please be aware that these are small venues so you will want to get over to the aftershows as quickly as possible if you don't want to spend the nite hanging in the parking lot to hear the music.

Thanks for your continued support and I apologize for the second email this week.

Many thanks due this week to Jeri Rowe at the Greensboro News and Record for the outstanding section about the Jomeokee Jamboree in last Thursday's City Life weekend planner. Overall, the articles clearly stated that jambands are not just a fad and we are a viable market for promoters and venue owners to reach. Let's hope this gives them a few ideas. Follow this link for the text of my article about the Grateful Dead heritage in the jamband scene. I'll also keep a link at Lonely Goat Central for awhile.

The Jomeokee Jamboree is this weekend. Check out the Jambase main page for a great summary piece from Jason 'The Mollusk' Beckwit. Not included in Jason's piece, but worth noting is the late nite shows accross the street from the Dixie Classic Fairgrounds. All music at the festival ends at 11PM. After that, walk the short two blocks to Baity Street where you will find bands playing at Ziggy's, Freddie B's, and Brew Ha-Ha's into the wee hours. Best of all...these shows are FREE with your festival armband/pass. Some of the spots are still being confirmed, but here is the schedule I'm aware of currently:
Friday Late Nite:
Ziggy's - Cosmic Charlie & Fat Apple
Freddie B's - Ancient Harmony
Brew Ha-Ha's - unconfimed
Saturday Late Nite:
Ziggy's - Cosmic Charlie
Freddie B's - Jive Turkee
Brew Ha-Ha's - Ancient Harmony
Don't forget about the Monday nite wrap-up party at Ziggy's too with The Dixie Dregs and The Steve Morse Band. It's only $10 with your Jomeokee Jamboree ticket stub.

It has been a while since I posted any new content so I'm going to flood you this week. Check out Lonely Goat Central for links to four new feature articles. Dennis Humphries reviews the JGB show at the Cat's Cradle 7/25/00. Also, J.D. Edwards re-emerges with some really great stuff. Check out his piece on stealth tapers as well as reviews of the David Grisman Quintet, Jean-Luc Ponty, and Charlie Hunter. Dennis has a new submission this week to Jambase also. Be sure to swing by for his weekend planner notes if you are looking for something other than the Jomeokee. Thanks in triplicate to these contributors for sharing their writings with the Lonely Goat audience. We have truly been blessed with some great contributors during the past two years.

VENUE NEWS
Rockits in Wilmington, NC is closing it's doors after twelve years. We have just recently discovered these folks and were excited about their summer jamband Thursday series. From what I understand, the decision to close is simply based on a need for the owners to focus on other parts of their business. Otters and Bessies in the downtown area have supported the jamband scene too. Let's hope they will take this opportunity to book a few more jamband acts for the Wilmington scene.

BAND NEWS
Greensboro's Allison King Band won the 14th Annual Piedmont Blues Preservation Society Amateur Talent Contest at Ziggy's last weekend. Folkswaggin' fans will be glad to know that our own David McCracken plays Hammond organ for this outfit. As the winners of the competition, AKB will have spots at the Carolina Lite Blues Fest in Greensboro, the Greensboro CitiStage, and the Bull Durham Blues Fest. Additionally, AKB will represent the Piedmont Blues Preservation Society in the 2001 International Blues Talent Contest to be held in Memphis later this year. Past PBPS winner, Abe Reid, won the international event as well. Congratulations to the Allison King Band.

Folkswaggin' will appear for a live on-air interview Wednesday on our good friend Joel Hudson's show WQFSjam. You can find it at 90.9 FM in Greensboro, NC from 6 to 8 PM. It's a great live music show and you can also listen online after the fact via Real Audio. You can also catch Folkswaggin' later in the evening at The Clubhouse in Greensboro.

The Zen Tricksters announced this week that Rob Baraco is leaving the band to pursue other projects. Rob, an eleven year trickster, will be playing this fall with Phil & Friends. Simultaneously, The Zen Tricksters welcome two new members. Dave Diamond will be joining on guitar and vocals and Jason Crosby will be taking over the keys.

Jive Turkee , who will be playing twice on Saturday at the Jomeokee Jamboree, is once again looking for a keyboardist. If they can ever fill this spot permanently (this will be the third keyboardist) they could really make an impact on the NC scene. Check them out this weekend.
