![]() Return to Goat Notes Archives First published in The Goatee E-Mail January 2001 Goat Notes 1.24.01 I've also made some updates to the Lonely Goat site including two new articles. Chris Kempf has the lowdown on T.H.H.E. Mood Cultivation Project and I'm finally posting a nice review of Drifting Through from last November. The first DeadHead's Festival Calendar of 2001 is out and I've posted the PDF at Lonely Goat. Go get it and make your plans for the rapidly approaching festival season. I've discovered a little known venue in Virginia that is putting on some outstanding Bluegrass shows this Spring. Check out The Floyd Country Store ad on the main page at the Lonely Goat site. If you are thinking about going to one of the shows, be sure to call ahead. This a small, intimate venue that seats less than 100. Speaking of Bluegrass music, have you heard about The Big Daddy Bluegrass Band? Steve Mcmurry (aka Big Daddy) of Acoustic Syndicate has put together an all-star band for a short tour this Spring. The band includes Steve on Mandolin, Larry Keel on guitar, Jenny Keel on bass, Billy Constable on banjo, and 'Dr. Dobro' Curtis Burch on dobro. They hit the road in April and I've added what dates are confirmed to the Jambase so check it out and mark your calendars. I don't have to tell you not to miss this one! Fans of Jam music in Charlotte have always frequented Jack Straw's. The venue has always put forth a top notch schedule and supported the scene while no one else was paying attention. Well, I'm sad to announce that Jack Straw's recently closed it's doors. Luckily for the Charlotte folks, The Visulite Theatre is going strong and coninutes to schedule the kind of music we all love. Thanks to Jack Straw's for all of the support over the years. Triad residents who are not going to Donna the Buffalo at Ziggy's on Friday, will want to check out what's happening at The Klick in Greensboro. Nurse and the Trauma Unit will be playing and there is a special Janis Joplin & Jimi Hendrix tribute planned. From what I understand, it will be a scorcher! The Blind Tiger in Greensboro is now presenting a new Bluegrass unit called Alibi on Wednesdays. A freind recently gave me the lead on this, but I have not made it out to a show yet. She says there is a truckload of talent in this band so check it out and let me know what you think. 1.18.01 t.h.h.e Mood Cultivation Project has been added to the lineup for Lonely Goat's (somewhat belated) Chinese New Year's event on February 16 @ The Klick in Greensboro. The Larry Keel Experience and Folkswaggin' are also both still playing too. Full details will be up on the Lonely Goat site soon. Speaking of Folkswaggin', they are in search of a drummer. Louis Bryant will hit the skins one last time with Folkswaggin' this Saturday at the Blind Tiger in Greensboro (btw - I heard about this show today and have not had time to confirm it at BT yet). I encourage any jam-lovin' drummers to check out Folkswaggin's site for details <http://www.folkswaggin.com>. This is a real opportunity for someone who wants to pursue music as a full time occupation. Folkswaggin' will continue to play while they search for a new drummer. Temporarily, keyboardist & Hammond maestro Dave McKracken has lined up a fill-in drummer: his dad, who has been a professional drummer for over 30 years. I'm looking forward to catching a show with this transition team. Winston Salem's Jive Turkee has found some new members. Dave Selkirk, their original keyboard player, has returned from the West Coast. Also Dale Jones has migrated from Portland, OR to join on Harmonica. Keep an eye & an ear on Jive Turkee this Spring. Charlotte's Wavy Train is taking some time off. The word is to expect them back about summer time. moe. will be at the Ritz in Raleigh on February 23rd. This show will sell out. Tickets went on sale 1.16.01. They can be purchased through Cat's Cradle in Carrboro or Ticketmaster. The price is $15 plus the usual service charges. However, buy your tickets with cash at the Cat's Cradle and their are no extra charges. Call 919-967-9053 for more information. 01.10.01 Thanks to everyone who celebrated the New Year with us at the Blind Tiger in Greensboro with Folkswaggin'. The event went well above anyone's expectations. I think you would be hard pressed to find the quality of kind folks that were assembled that night. We are truly blessed to have such a wonderful home base in Greensboro. We have some exciting projects developing for the next few months: The annual Chinese New Year's event is slated for February 16 at The Klick in Greensboro. The Larry Keel Experience and Folkswaggin' will be the featured acts. THIS YEAR'S EVENT WILL BE A BENEFIT. Over the holidays, a great friend and supporter of the scene was involved in a horrible automobile accident while visiting family in Texas. Long time readers of Lonely Goat publications will recognize Manny's name from his illustration which appeared on the cover of the November issue of our magazine in 1999. Manny suffered a broken sternum in the accident and is doing alright now. His brother has two broken legs. His sister in law passed on during the accident. His 6 year old neice was in a coma, but has recently regained consciousness. His 12 year old neice suffered a broken arm and a mild concusssion. Both passengers in the vehicle which crossed traffic and hit them head on passed on at the accident. Keep Manny and his family in your thoughts as they face this incredibly painful experience and come out on February 16 to show your support. All proceeds from the event will go to help pay for the medical costs resulting from the accident. We are also comming to the end of the planning stages for The Seventh Annual Smilefest - Two days of peace, love, and music in the North Carolina Sunshine. The date is set for June 8-10. We have a new location too! We are excited to announce that we have secured the Van Hoy Campground in Union Grove, NC for the event. The Van Hoy Campground was the home of The World Champion Fiddler's Convention back in the 1970's. This is an amazing site! More information comming soon. |
