August 2001 Goat Notes

08.24.01
The Brushy Mountain Jamboree came and went last weekend and I think we are all better off now than we were one week ago. Smilefest Productions once again provided a full course delight with all the pickins' and we feasted. I caught up with plenty of old friends and met some great new people. Thanks for making it so enjoyable folks! Thanks also to the SmileFolks for keeping it all going. Brushy Mountain seems to have a nice calendar spot during the season. I hope there will be another next year. Since the BMJ is so close to Smilefest and the BMJ is so heavily Bluegrass, there might be some room for more rock acts during primetime at Smilefest? They have a message board over at http://www.smilefest.com so tell them what you want in 2002.

I caught up with T. Dawg last weekend and he said everything is coming together nicely for the Harvest Fest 2001 to be held just outside of Atlanta on September 28-30. This is a great festival with a great lineup at a great price.<http://www.tdawgsproductions.com>

There are so many festivals coming up that I'm presenting a sumamry today. You can always find my current festival listings on the What's Happening page at Lonely Goat Central.

Finally, I want to appeal to the bands and band management listed on the Bands page at Lonely Goat Central. Please go to http://www.jambase.com and update your tourdates. There are too many shows falling through the cracks. I try to surf through each site on my listings once a month and update the Jambase with your schedules. The list is getting pretty long though. Despite my best efforts, I can't put everyone's dates in myself. I'm sure you want folks to know where and when you are playing next at least as much as I do, so help me out if you can. I'm still going to do as much as I can, but entering your dates yourself will guarantee your listing is the Goatee email.

I hope everyone was able to catch Phil & Friends at one of their two shows last week. The music was of course outstanding, but I wish those of us in the back of the lawn could have heard it better. There was a reason for 'wall of sound' that the Grateful Dead toted around. I don't go to many of the amphitheatre shows, but I don't remember straining to hear the music before. I think I'll just wait for a better venue next time. There is just no reason to fill a huge lawn with people and then play music at a level that only half of the place can enjoy.

I want to remind everyone about the Brushy Mountain Jamboree next weekend. The folks at Smilefest Productions are working hard to create another enjoyable weekend of peace, love and music. There have been a few special additions to the band schedule since I last mentioned the event so stop by their website for all of the new goodies. <http://www.smilefest.com>

Jerry Garcia (August 1, 1942 - August 9, 1995) - We miss you Jerry...

Of course the biggest news this week is that Phil Lesh & Friends are in NC this Friday and Saturday. There are more details in the schedule below and I recommend getting your tickets ASAP. There's a good chance these could sell out folks.

I'm not sure if I've mentioned it before, but Labor Day weekend is also the weekend of ProgDay 2001. It takes place September 1 & 2, 2001 at beautiful Storybook Farm in Chapel Hill, North Carolina, ProgDay is the longest running North American progressive rock festival, dating back to 1995. Its unique outdoor environment has inspired countless stellar performances. Do not miss your chance to be part of this great progressive rock tradition.<http://www.progday.com>.

A few folks have sent me emails asking about the old Lonely Goat print magazine. I'm not publishing in print currently, but I hope to bring it back sometime in the future. From September of 1998 to September of 2000, I published nineteen issues of this zine and had a blast. Needless to say, it takes a lot of time and money to produce a monthly periodical and the resources aren't available right now. Don't fear, however! I do want it to return one day.
