November 2001 Goat Notes

I had a great time at the 3rd Annual Thanksgathering last weekend. Thanks to Ziggy's for having it once again. Thanks to Mark and Celeste of Mister Charlie's for putting on this event. Thanks to everyone who came, ate, danced, and filled the room with positive vibrations.

There is a bounty of good music across the state this weekend. I'll be at the Blind Tiger in Greensboro tonite to see t.h.h.e. Mood Cultivation Project. Go see live music and support your favorite jamband this weekend.

I'm sad to report that Chapel Hill's blues rock jam band Early Grace has disbanded. Jeff Lindsey, drummer for eg, is looking for a funk-groove project to get involved with so if you're on the lookout for a drummer with 22 years of experience send Jeff a note @ jlindsey@unch.unc.edu .

New Year's Eve is quickly approaching. JamBase has created a special page listing festivities accross the USA. Look for the ad on the right side of the page at http://www.jambase.com. All the bands out there should make sure to add your event too! Folks have been asking what's up so let's get the information out there.

Happy Thanksgiving to everyone! I'm gong to keep this short and sweet this week since I'm on the way out of town myself.

Just one quick reminder to check out the information for the THIRD ANNUAL THANKSGATHERING which will be held Sunday at Ziggy's in Winston Salem, NC. Featured bands include Ancient Harmony, t.h.h.e. Mood Cultivation Project, Man Alive!, Bluesville featuring Nurse, and Braco. There is also a potluck dinner to kick it all off at 3PM. This has been a great event the first two years and I hope to see lots of folks out there. Let's gather and be thankful! <http://www.lonelygoat.com/lonelygoat/ads/tgathIII.htm>

2002 Merlefest tickets went on sale Tuesday. The Fifteenth edition of this festival is scheduled for April 25 - 28, 2002. No rush though, early bird prices go through March 18. I was happy to see that The Larry Keel Experience will be there this year with Tony Rice. Beyond the big names that are always at Merlefest, a few more you might recognize from the jamband scene include Railroad Earth and Yonder Mountain String Band. <http://www.merlefest.org>

I've posted a few 'bands wanted' type items on the website recently and announced them in the email. It seems to be useful so here is another one: The NEMO MUSIC SHOWCASE AND CONFERENCE will take place in Boston on April 11 - 13, 2002. This is a networking event for industry types and bands can submit to perform during the conference. I've posted their complete email at http://www.lonelygoat.com/lonelygoat/ads/nemo.htm.

Winston Salem's Jive Turkee has finally found a permanent bass player. Dennis Sullivan just moved to town from Buffalo, NY where he used to jam with Chris and Dale of JT back in the 1990's. <http://www.mp3.com/jiveturkee>

If you caught Jive Turkee recently, you may have heard Steven Clarke sitting in on bass. Steven is with Greensboro's Blue Bambooza usually and they are another band worth your newgrass time if you have not heard. Very smooth stuff happening with this trio. <http://www.bluebambooza.com>

Georgia's Blueground Undergrass has always had a strong North Carolina connection. They have a new studio CD of original material called 'NewGround.' All of you who have asked about a new BGUG CD can pick one up when they come to NC on 11.23.01 @ Ziggy's and 12.14.01 @Stella Blue. <http://www.bluegroundundergrass.com>

In a 'Behind the Scenes' note, we all know how important sound is to a good live performance. Since the early days of Smilefest, Sound Productions of Greensboro has been providing the sound services. {Please note that they were NOT running sound at the Brushy Mountain Jamboree 2001, which is a discussion unto itself on the Smilefest Productions message board.} Sound Productions has split. Shane Lee, who most of us know from Blue Bambooza and Folkswaggin', is going to have a more regular scheduled, less mobile service. John Fix, the more hidden half of the Sound Productions team, will have mobile event services available. So don't forget to give John Fix a call when your thinking for services Sound Productions used to have available. He is a knowledgeable and experienced sound engineer and can be reached at 336-379-9807.

Watch your email for the first ever ticket giveaway from Lonely Goat. I have two pairs of tickets for Mickey Hart's Bembe Orisha in Greensboro next Thursday. Details will come in a separate email shortly. By the way, MD3 and Ergot will be at the Blind Tiger (just a few blocks from the Greensboro Coliseum) that evening so stop by there if you are still in the spirit after Mickey Hart's Bembe Orisha.

Open Door Artist Mangagement in Raleigh wants bands to get in touch with them for bookings at the Six String Cafe. Follow this link for details: http://www.lonelygoat.com/lonelygoat/ads/sixstring.htm

Mister Charlie's has announced the third annual THANKSGATHERING is scheduled for November 25th at Ziggy's in Winston Salem, NC. This event has been a great time for two years now and I expect it to be just as special this year. There will be the traditional potluck dinner (bring your favorite dish to share!) starting at 3PM and continuous music from Bluesville featuring Nurse, Braco, Man Alive!, Ancient Harmony, and T.h.h.e. Mood Cultivation Project. Check out the ad at http://www.lonelygoat.com/lonelygoat/ads/tgathIII.htm.

Have you heard about the new full length feature about David Grisman and Jerry Garcia? It's called GRATEFUL DAWG and will be in limited release all over the US during the next few months. There is a theatre release schedule at http://www.sonyclassics.com/gratefuldawg/ or you can listen to this NPR interview with David Grisman.
