April 2002 Goat Notes

The festivals are kicking in to high gear and the weather is invigorating. I've been reflecting about lyrics that inspire the season:
----------------------------------
"Well everybody's dancin' in a ring around the sun
Nobody's finished, we ain't even begun.
So take off your shoes, child, and take off your hat.
Try on your wings and find out where it's at."

"Hey hey, hey, come right away
Come and join the party every day."

"The Golden Road (To Unlimited Devotion)"
Words and music by Jerry Garcia
-----------------------------------

I answer all of my Grateful Dead lyric questions at The Annotated Grateful Dead Lyrics: a Web Site By David Dodd. But be forewarned! You can get lost here for hours. <http://arts.ucsc.edu/gdead/agdl/>

Coincidentally, it is a big festival weekend in NC. Besides the biggies like MERLEFEST < http://www.merlefest.org/> and CITYFEST LIVE < http://www.centercitymusicfest.com/>, there a a number of smaller gatherings happening. Be sure to check out the Festivals page at Lonely Goat Central for the full scope of events. <http://www.lonelygoat.com/lonelygoat/festivals.htm>

If you want to catch a lot of great bands for a fairly low cost, you may want to consider heading to Charlotte this weekend for their annual downtown street festival called CITYFEST LIVE. There are over 60 bands on four stages from Friday to Sunday including such jamBand notables as LEFTOVER SALMON, THE DISCO BISCUITS, KARL DENSON'S TINY UNIVERSE, MOFRO, ACOUSTIC SYNDICATE, O.A.R., LAKE TROUT, and RANA. <http://www.cityfestlive.com/>

Leftover Salmon is in North Carolina next week with shows in Charlotte on Saturday, Wilmington on Sunday, Carrboro on Monday, and Winston Salem on Tuesday. These promise to be some pretty intense shows as the band is touring in honor of the memory of banjoist, Mark Vann, who lost his battle with cancer on March 4th. Those who have followed LoS since the early nineties will attest that one of the core messages from this band has been that a concert is a fun, interactive experience and that celebrating good music with like minds is a powerful force for healing and understanding. Festivaaaaaaal. <http://www.leftoversalmon.com>

It's a great weekend for outdoor music fans. Widespread Panic in Raleigh 4.19 & 4.20 and in Asheville 4.21! <http://widespreadpanic.com/>

If the pavilions are not your thing, GREENFEST is happening at the Chicken Shack in Chapel Hill. They have a great lineup of 17 bands including THE LARRY KEEL EXPERIENCE, THE EMMA GIBBS BAND, and DAVID VIA & CORN TORNADO for instance. It's a three day camping festival with quality music for $20 bucks. Pretty unheard of these days. <http://www.unc.edu/student/orgs/norml>

Besides that, there are more local shows and touring acts playing this weekend than you can shake your butt at. Some very lucky folks will decide to make that DAVID NELSON BAND show in Asheville on Sunday. One show in NC for probably the most underrated jamBand heavy around. I don't understand why DNB is not insanely popular. <http://www.nelsonband.com/>

Last year I ran a PSA for auditions for the CAROLINA CALLING television series. CAROLINA CALLING is a 13-Weekly episode all-new and original variety show focusing on talented performers exclusively from North Carolina, chosen from a series of Touchstone Energy Carolina Calling Talent Searches, culminating in one performer winning a recording contract with Carolina Calling producer Smith Companies Entertainment. CAROLINA CALLING also features appearances from well-known guests with North Carolina connections and classic clips from Arthur Smith,s own archives. Saturdays at 8 PM through June 29, 2002. The UNC Center for Public Television is North Carolina,s 11-station, statewide television network, committed to using telecommunications wisely and imaginatively to inform, educate, and enrich all North Carolinians. <http://www.unctv.org/cc>

Another local music television show has also recently appeared. FRESH TRAXX TV will start airing in the Greensboro/High Point/Winston Salem market on WTWB on Friday Nights and again on Saturdays. The program will feature music videos, interviews, local and independent music news, and more. FRESH TRAXX TV is based in Greensboro and they are looking for talent to feature so check them out at http://www.freshtraxxtv.com.

Acoustic progressive rock fans take note. Greensboro's LIFE TRIP (a member of the Lonely Goat Network) will release their sixth CD "World of Evil" this Saturday 4.20.02 at Keegans Pub in Greensboro. Ezra Kelly(formerly of BRACO) is playing drums for this show as a special guest. <http://www.lonelygoat.com/lifetrip>

I hope everyone had a great Easter weekend. Maybe you went to visit family and caught your favorite old hometown band or used the extra day off for a road trip show.

Here is an interesting comparison: The April 1999 Lonely Goat print magazine featured about 100 http://www.Jambase.com date listings for the period of April 1 to May 15. Today I searched the same time period and received 300 listings. Even more encouraging is the fact that the bulk of the new listings are new bands since 1999 or older bands that have discovered the jam community.

I'm happy to announce that the First Edition Lonely Goat T-Shirt is now available for web ordering. Check out the new Lonely Goat Store: http://www.lonelygoat.com/lg_store/store.htm.

This Spring weather has me thinking about SMILEFEST 2002. There is an ad below with all of the artists on this year's bill and it is simply unbelievable. One of the most unique things about Smilefest, is Bob Robertson's ability to put musicians in the right places for amazing things to happen. Let your imagination fly and consider the possible jam sessions from this lineup. Add an incredible venue for the music and a reasonable ticket price and perhaps you have the best festival for the money this summer. <http://www.smilefest.com>
