May 2002 Goat Notes

I have had a few suggestions for lyrics and I will be including them in future emails. Thanks for getting involved. This feature has been a hit it seems. I know I ran an EKOOSTIK HOOKAH lyric two weeks ago, but this is HOOKAHVILLE weekend and they are my favorite band to see:
----------------------------------
But I know folks who ain't that way.
I'd love to see them everyday,
but sometimes I can't get through,
so, man, it's good to see you.

I know people who are not afraid to smile.
And being friendly's still in style.
And I got friends who let their spirits run completely wild.
You would be wise to maybe try it for a while.

HOOKAHVILLE is this weekend in Ohio. Check out the festival web site if you feel like the driveit's worth it. <http://www.hookahville.com>

Speaking of festivals, I was up at Van Hoy Farms last weekend working on the FURTHUR ADVENTURES STAGE for SMILEFEST 2002. Those who have been to VHF before will hardly recognize the place this year. The Smilefest Productions crew have been working hard to improve the grounds and open up some great camping spots. The field where the new additional stage will be is amazing. You enter over a bridge and the rest of the field is enclosed by trees. It creates a very comfortable setting for what should be some outstanding music. Check out the page at Lonely Goat Central for a map of the grounds. <http://www.lonelygoat.com/lonelygoat/smile02.htm>

SMILEFEST 2002 advance ticket sales at the price of $75 have been extended until June 3rd! After that it is $85 at the gate only. Better hurry! <http://www.smilefest.com>

Week number four in the lyric feature series and thanks to the folks who said I should use something from Panic:
----------------------------------
Oh,kiss the mountain air we breathe
Good-bye it's time to fly.
Sparrow climb, the air is thinner,
Open wings cast this valley in the shade.

Fires dance the shadows
Winds whisper the trees
Mother talkin' the water's
Spirit moves, it moves through all things.

I pulled this lyric off of a great Panic site called Everyday Companion and of late it has been just that. <http://www.everydaycompanion.com>

I wrote an article this week about the up and coming Greensboro JamRock band NONE THE WISER. It's posted in the Features section of Lonely Goat Central: http://www.lonelygoat.com/lonelygoat/features/archives.htm. By some strange coincidence, NONE THE WISER will be at The Blind Tiger in Greensboro on Saturday, May 18. Check them out if you get the chance. <http://www.nonethewiser.com>

There will be a Smilefest warm-up show at Ziggy's in Winston-Salem, NC on Friday, May 24th. Kicking off the night will be Greensboro's own cosmic Latin/Jazz/Rock/Fusion band BRACO, followed by the always mind-blowing jams of t.h.h.e. MOOD CULTIVATION PROJECT. Two pairs of Smilefest tickets will be up for grabs with camping cooler packages provided by Ziggy's.

I've posted some updates to the FURTHUR ADVENTURES STAGE @ SMILEFEST 2002 page at Lonely Goat Central including an updated map of Van Hoy Farms so that you can get excited about the new stage area. The entire field will be for hosting the stage and we are starting to develop some ideas to liven up the place beyond the already spectacular natural setting. <http://www.lonelygoat.com/lonelygoat/smile02.htm>

Finally, a last notice to any one who has procrastinated this long. My most recent information is that advance ticket sales for SMILEFEST 2002 will end on May 20th. After that it is $85 at the gate only. Better hurry! <http://www.smilefest.com>

Well, I'm keeping up this lyric feature for a third week. This week's feature is a little long, but this is a twenty-minute song when EKOOSTIK HOOKAH plays it live:
----------------------------------
I'll never have to go to see a movie
Or read it in a magazine
I don't need no books
Or the man on the TV screen.

Sometimes it's hard to figure what you wanna do
When there's so many choices, which one's for you?
I don't have to think about it, I know what a I wanna do.

Just hear some music.
The feeling takes me over
It fills my very soul.
It's something deep inside me
And it always lets me know.

I got mowtown, I got showtown and the Armstrong blues.
And Santana's always jammin' to some funky latin groove.
If I really think about it, I don't even have to choose
just give me music

The FLAT ROCK MUSIC FESTIVAL has been running an ad in the Goatee and at Lonely Goat Central for the past month. I hope everyone has already noticed them and decided about going because it is this weekend. It should be a great time for music fans and family and a well spaced warm-up for SMILFEST 2002 in June. If your festival itch needs to be scratched, go check out FLAT ROCK this weekend. Mother's get in free on Sunday! <http://www.flatrockmusicfestival.com>

Preparations continue for SMILEFEST 2002 and the debut of the FURTHUR ADVENTURES STAGE in the back field of Van Hoy Farms. Make no mistake that the main stage at SMILEFEST is simply unreal, but we should have a pretty good time in the back field too. A schedule of both stages has been published at the Smilefest Productions web site <http://www.smilefest.com/smilefest2002.html>. Please notice that there is very little overlap of music performances between the two stages. For years, Smilefest has resisted the notion of an additional stage because they never felt comfortable making folks choose between artists. I think the line-ups at each stage compliment each other and no one will be left feeling like they missed anything. An update is coming soon for the SMILEFEST 2002 page at Lonely Goat Central too so make sure to swing by early next week for the latest and greatest. <http://www.lonelygoat.com/lonelygoat/smile02.htm>

Georgia's Ancient Harmony announced this week that drummer, Michael Cansler has decided to leave the band and pursue other projects. The band was forced to cancel the gigs for the 2nd, 3rd and 4th May. However, the remaining 3 members are committed to the band and are in the process of finding a replacement full time drummer. In the short term the band will continue to play future shows as per the schedule with special guest drummers sitting in. <http://www.ancientharmony.com>

I always get such great feedback when I run a lyric in the email, so I thought I'd include another one this week:
----------------------------------
Going up to the mountain, to catch a falling star.
Don't know when I'll get there, but I know it's not too far.

Going up to the mountain, gonna cross the passageway,
I Don't know when I'll get there, but I know I'm gonna stay.

Going up to the mountain, to call home.
Know that when I get there, that I won't be alone.

Going up to the mountain, through the power in my hands.
Know that when I get there, It'll be the promised land.

I'm excited to announce the FURTHUR ADVENTURES STAGE @ SMIELFEST 2002! Lonely Goat will be hosting the new stage at Smilefest <http://www.smilefest.com>, June 6-9 at Van Hoy Farms in Union Grove, NC. This is the eighth edition of the festival known to us all as the "celebration of peace, love, and music in the North Carolina sunshine" and it promises to be an unparalleled experience. This will be the first time Smilefest has featured more than one stage and I am glad that Lonely Goat can be a part of the occasion. I've created a page at Lonely Goat Central where I will be posting more information about the FURTHUR ADVENTURES STAGE. So far, there is just a larger version of the graphic I have on the main page of Lonely Goat Central. Check it out at http://www.lonelygoat.com/lonelygoat/smile02.htm.

It's been a while since any articles or reviews were posted in the Features page at Lonely Goat. This week, however, Will Cumberland has shared a piece about the LEFTOVER SALMON at Ziggy's last Tuesday. The Features page is often overlooked and there is some great stuff available there. Stop by and browse a bit in the archives and keep an eye out for new postings. I'm starting to add the back catalog of articles that only appeared in print in 1998 and 1999. My goal is to have everything that has ever been contributed available on the web. This week I re-posted some photo galleries from past HOOKAHVILLES <http://www.hookahville.com> which were overlooked in site revisions. The Features page is available at: http://www.lonelygoat.com/lonelygoat/features/archives.htm.

I stumbled across an interesting one-day event for this Saturday in Asheville. The FUNPEACE MUSICFEST will take place at Montford Park Amphitheater and will feature some of the movers and shakers in the local Asheville music scene. They don't have a web site for the event, but there is a good listing on JamBase at http://www.jambase.com/festivals/indexDB.asp?stateID=33
