June 2002 Goat Notes

06.20.02
Well, it's been quite a while since I managed to put out a Goatee email and for that I apologize. Actually, it's been four weeks if you can believe that. I'll spare you my lame excuses and get to the good stuff...

I'm going to pick right up with the weekly lyric feature. I'm happy to share a local North Carolina artist this week:
----------------------------------
I have walked a million miles it seems
Yet I've never walked alone
It's a long, hard climb
On the mountain side
But Spirit will be there to lead you home
And together we can sing a sweeter song

I have listened to the preacher
Yeah I've heard the words he's said
I have laid down with the devil in the dirt
But my spirit will shine on for I am blessed
Yes my spirit will shine on for I am blessed

It's allright if you never say goodnight
But it surely takes its' toll
By & by we can reach the morning light & find rest for a tired & weary soul

~D.Craig
From the song "Tired & Weary Soul"

Darrell Craig is a singer/songwriter based in Greensboro, NC. When he's not playing music, he runs Buffalo Design screen-printing and makes shirts for folks like Lonely Goat and Smilefest. <http://www.lonelygoat.com/buffalo/index.htm>

This is the first email since SMILEFEST 2002 a few weeks ago. Huge amounts of appreciation and respect should be cast upon Smilefest Productions for producing an even better event than last year's debut at Van Hoy Farms. JamBase has posted a review of the festival at: http://www.jambase.com/headsup.asp?storyID=2588
Did you catch the FURTHUR ADVENTURES STAGE at SMILEFEST 2002? We had a blast hosting the back pasture and hope to be invited back to do it again next year. I've posted a page of photos and notes in the Features section at Lonely Goat: http://www.lonelygoat.com/lonelygoat/features/tc_smile02.htm

I have also posted a feature with photos of Spring HOOKAHVILLE at: http://www.lonelygoat.com/lonelygoat/features/tc_hv17.htm
Fall HOOKAHVILLE 2002 is only 71 days away and most of the line up was announced this week including: LEO KOTTKE, GALACTIC, ROBERT RANDOLF AND THE FAMILY BAND, WAR, and of course two nights of EKOOSTIK HOOKAH! There may be one more to be announced. <http://www.hookahville.com>

MD3 (Mad Dog Trio) made a big impression at SMILEFEST 2002. They have had a page in the Lonely Goat Network for a while, but they have recently launched a full site at: http://www.maddogtrio.net

If you have picked up any of the free entertainment weekly papers available in Greensboro and surrounding areas in the past two months, there is a pretty good chance you've read an article about CYRIL LANCE. The lap steel and blues rock guitarist in Greensboro has just released the CD 'Stranger in my House' which featured in the band: Johnny Neel (Gov't Mule, Matt Abs Band, Allman Bros. Willie Nelson, Blue Floyd) on vocals and Boston based B3-superman Matt Jensen (Sam McClain, Ronnie Earl). The regional touring quartet is Dave McCracken on Hammond B3, Chris Carrol on bass & vocals, Kelly Pace on drums, and Cyril on guitar and lap steel. Okay, is that enough names to convince you that you should check out this band? Find out Sunday June 23 at The Blind Tiger in Greensboro. <http://cyrillance.com>

My last item this week is a pretty big announcement. I re-launched the LONELY GOAT PRINT MAGAZINE at Smilefest. In the good old days of 1998-2000, I published a monthly black & white saddle-stitched zine first for free until the money ran out and then by subscription until the money ran out. Subscribers at that time were rewarded for their subscription with the first FiddleGoat shirts (if you still haven't gotten yours, please email meI have a list with your name on it). I am offering the subscription print publication again for two reasons. The first is that folks who remember it keep asking for it. The second is that I'm unemployed from my professional gig and I'd like to put my time into something fulfilling if enough people support the idea. The first issue is planned for August and I would like to have a good list of subscribers to send it to. I ask you to show your support for a NC and surrounding area jam zine in print. The focus of the publication is to feature the promoters, venues, bands, and fans that are making the scene happen. The zine will have show listings for touring jam acts and regional festival listings. It's essentially a monthly planner for jam fans with some articles. Everyone says we need it so here it is. Subscriptions can be purchased online with check or credit card at: http://www.lonelygoat.com/lg_store/store.htm
