All of you Folkswaggin' heads who have been asking about what Bob Worrells is up to can rest easy. Greensboro has a new bluegrass band. HIGHSTRUNG is a full bluegrass outfit with Ben George on lead vocals & rhythm guitar, Willam Hicks on mandolin & vocals, Alan Hines on banjo, Bob Worrells on lead guitar & vocals, and Ed Atkinson on bass. HIGHSTRUNG will play this Saturday nite at the Greenbean Coffee Shop on Elm Street downtown around 8:30PM.8.18.02
A few rumors are beginning to circulate about a possible event at Van Hoy Farms in October. Nothing is confirmed as far as I know, but the Smilefest Productions Message Board says the following names have been heard among the rumors: moe., Jorma Kaukonen, Leftover Salmon, Yonder Mountain String Band, and Derek Trucks. This is of course, just a rumor. Check out the Smilefest Productions Message Board for more.

There is a new blues band based out of Burlington, NC. THE REV. JENKINS BLUES PROJECT features former members of THE BRANDON SANTINI BAND... Greg Morrison(Vocals, guitar), Brandon Santini (Harmonica)& Larry Rogers (Lead guitar) as well as current members of the new jamband DEEP RIVER...Ryan "Bunk" Burgess(Drums), Marc Meeker (Bass) & Kansas City Keith Ingalls (Keyboards). The band says, "RJBP is constantly trying to promote the blues to a generation that is ever so slowly turning away from the music that is a true American gem. The blues doesn't belong on the shelf in a museum rather it needs to be a constantly growing, breathing art form!"

TOADY FATZ is a new name in the Charlotte psychedelic rock scene and today they are featured in the Charlotte Observer. The band is hosting it's first FATZ FEST this Saturday at Smokey Joe's in Charlotte which promises to be something unique and spirited. Winston Salem blues-funk JIVE TURKEE will be playing a two night stand this weekend in Beaufort, NC. JT fans may want to consider a last minute get-away. The bands says, "Something about the Backstreet Pub makes the band play on another level. This is surely a weekend not to be missed!" The Greensboro based jump blues band RUSS WILSON and HIS MIGHTY - MIGHTY MEN are having a CD release party this Saturday, August 17. 'Roaring at the Red Lion' is the CD and the Red Lion in High Point, NC is the place for the show Saturday. Show time will be at 10:00 pm. Rus Wilson recently stopped touring with Steady Rollin' Bob Margolin to begin this new project. David McKracken, formerly hammond organ maestro for The Alison King Band and Folkswaggin', is known to play as a member of the mighty men too.

THE ORDINARY WAY from Washington DC has been around for years and continues to tour like mad. Every now and then, they come round the Carolinas including such notables as the Hookland festival in 2000. Catch them if you can when they play their only NC stops in the fall tour at The Asheville Music Zone on Sunday August 25th with Perpetual Groove and again at The Asheville Music Zone on Sunday October 13th .

The psychedelic rock band ERGOT from Wilmington, NC has announced a two night extravaganza scheduled for August 30&31 at The Last Call in Wilmington. TECHNICOLOR BY NUMBERS is what they are calling it and each night starting at 7pm will feature 1 set of THE BUBBA QUINTET out of Baltimore, and a full show by ERGOT. DJ BOOGA BEAR will also spin during set breaks. The event will also feature Ergot's new laster light show provided by IPS. Tickets are available through www.jambasetickets.com.

Greensboro locals will want to mark their calendars for Saturday, September 28th. THE TATE STREET/ COLLEGE HILL FESTIVAL will be held from 12 to 5pm in the Tate Street Business District. Music, crafts, arts, antiques, food, and fun will be offered with proceeds to benefit the Community Improvement Fund. The Chapel Hill based americana rock band MEMPHIS is playing the 25th of September at The Blind Tiger in Greensboro, NC. Although the band has played at a few small gatherings in the Triad, they have not much support in the clubs. So all you folks who say they are great get out of the back yard and show some support for the club dates. Wanda Smith of Wicker Walker Promotions is now working closely with the band to improve their recognition in the Triad. Give her a call with any ideas or suggestions at 336-856-1013.

Pennsylvania based ALMOST ACOUSTIC BAND will make their North Carolina debut on September 3rd at the Mellow Mushroom in Chapel Hill. Comprised of Billy Gilmore (Banjo, Mandolin, Fiddle, Dobro, Guitar, Vocals), Brent Hopper (Guitar, Mandolin, Vocals), and Josh Foster (Organ, Keyboards, Vocals), the ALMOST ACOUSTIC BAND brings something unique to the mushroom's fabled bluegrass purists.
